Hi, one & all, I am Nick from sunny Singapore, welcome to my blog. The objective of this blog is to share with all like minded vintage watch collectors like me who has a deep passion for mechanical timepieces, especially unique ones. =)
Lets begin with a short intro of myself, I graduated from Singapore polytechnic in 1988 & have worked as an mechanical engineer for more than 15 years after serving national service in the army for 2.5 years. These 15 years included research, development & design for home & car audio products in the mechanical aspects of the product.
I have always been fascinated by all things mechanical & have a deep interest in how they could work better. But when I bought my 1st mechanical watch, an automatic Oris big crown with a date indicator hand, I was blown away with the intricacies of all the shiny moving parts synchronizing in harmony within the movement and delivering the tiny heart beats of the pallet fork hitting the balance wheel's ruby pin. The products I have work with is no where close to this mechanical beauty. I was thinking to myself of the amount work that has gone into the creation of such a beautiful mechanical wonder.
My First Mechanical Watch (An Oris Automatic Big Crown)
From then on, I was hooked on these mechanical beauties, but I was only able to kick start my watch collecting in the year 2003, thanks to my friends from the USA who was able to help me source for vintage mechanical timepieces as they were working closely with auction houses dealing in valuable vintage & antiques collectibles. Initially, I have a few, then tens, then hundreds & finally, problems start surfacing when they stop running & needs servicing or repairs.
Being an engineer, I started disassembling them & try to service them myself, but I soon found out that they are speaking a different language from the mechanical products that I was used to. So again I sourced for watchmaking & watch repairing books & immersed myself in them to understand the ins & outs of the art of watchmaking. After spending a small fortune on the reading materials, the next is the big fortune killer, the tools & equipment! Don't be fooled by their small sizes, they really pack a punch & cost a bomb if you insist on using only solid quality Swiss tools & believe me, every dollar extra for a good quality tool is worth it & would pay for itself over a lifetime usage (that's usually how long they would last if well taken care of). =)
